Do you want a career in science? Questions to ask yourself

Post in: German

What do you want to do with your life? Is science something you’d like to engage in? What would that involve? On 28. June 2017, the University of Koblenz-Landau’s Women Career Center, Projekt Zugewinn, the Interdisziplinäres Promotionszentrum, and Frauenbüro together with the Gleichstellungsbüro of the Hochschule Koblenz hosted a day-long symposium on Career Pathways in Science. For the section on
Work conditions and career paths in science, I presented a set of questions to ask oneself and aspects of science careers that may go unmentioned but are nonetheless important. Many heads were nodding in the audience during my presentation as I cited from Postdocs regarding their assessments of science careers.
The organizers did a magnificent job of planning and constructing the day. The afternoon had presentations from Sascha Noack of the Deutscher Hochschulverband (DHV), Dr. Antje Wegner of the Deutsches Zentrum für Hochschul- und Wissenschaftsforschung (DZHW), and Assoc. Prof. Inge Bleijenbergh, PhD, from the Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands. All gave fantastic perspectives from their areas of research and specialties.
